Requirements for Godparents (Sponsor)
There may be one or two sponsors. If two, one must be male (godfather) and the other female (godmother). At least one sponsor must be a fully initiated Catholic in good standing with the Church. The other godparent may be a baptized Christian of a different faith (Christian witness, not a sponsor). The Catholic Sponsor must be at least 16 years of age, baptized, confirmed and have received the Eucharist, be living an upright life, have no penalties (e.g., divorced and remarried, or left the Church), and cannot be the child’s parent. Sponsors must attend Baptism Class.
Baptism for Child/Children over the age of 7
According to Canon Law (97.2) “the age of reason” is considered to be 7 years old. Can. 852 identifies, “The provisions of the canons on adult baptism apply to all those who, being no longer infants, have reached the age of reason.” Thus, the church directs us to catechize these older children and guide them through the RCIA (Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults) process that leads them toward full initiation as Catholics. For baptisms of child/children over the age of 7/RCIA, please contact Jenny Mansingh.
